The Ultimate Cream Sensation - Irish Cream With Cream Cheese

Once Upon A Milkshake
Maxwell Chambers
Tanjong Pagar, Singapore
August 2012

Feeling a bit jelak with her constant chocolate endeavours, Merlion Wayfarer explored a non-chocolate one this round. She went for the Red Velvet Cake with Ice Cream. Combined with Babelicious Baileys, the combination costs S$6.50. The cake was surprisingly delicious with the Baileys taste enhancing the cream cheese fragrance in the Red Velvet cake.

The Ultimate Plainness

Once Upon A Rosti
Shenton Way, Singapore
August 2012
Merlion Wayfarer tried out the double rosti of "Ultimate Sausage Combo". At S$7.50 (UP S$10), it came with 4 gourmet sausages (half portions) of beef, cheesy chicken, chicken and German pork.
A cosy little place with chairs and seats of different types - metal, wooden, cane, plastic.
The haphazard pull-together of different elements creates an eclectic atmosphere...

After having tried out both (See "The Milkshakers' Rostis"), Merlion Wayfarer felt that the portions are way too small. At least a triple size is recommended. The rostis are nowhere near the quality of those in Swissbake or Marche. More like a supermarket reheated version of potatoes. This may be be due to the space constraints in the tiny outlet at this location...

Toast Roasted Over Charcoal

Ya Kun
Far East Square
18 China Street, #01-01 S049560
Chinatown, Singapore
August 2012

Merlion Wayfarer was recently in Chinatown coz of a food craving - to try a 76-year tradition of coffee and toast.
A picture of the toast and coffee set...

Ya Kun does the toast just right - using browned bread roasted over a grill, the old way with charcoals. Unlike many outlets they don’t scrimp and save on the butter and kaya. Neither do they use Planter Margarine which leaves a bad aftertaste. That’s why the toast tastes so good!

Carrot Cake Came From A Bolster

Cheng Ji (成记)
Stall 24, Adam Road Food Centre
2 Adam Road, S289876
Bukit Timah, Singapore
19 August 2012

Merlion Wayfarer likes to stop by Adam Road Food Centre on her way to the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Of course, the traditional favourites are the nasi lemak and the tarik stalls. But being the Hari Raya weekend, of course most of these are not open. Mai hiam! Merlion Wayfarer is flexible where food is concerned!

There is a festive mood about the place with the national day mini-flags looped around the al fresco seats and bouquets of flowers on lampposts. Ok ok ok, no need remind me, she will remember to send her Hari Raya greetings to her Muslim friends and watch PM Lee at the National Day Rally next week!

She scans around the mostly-closed place with her eagle eyes. In her computer mind, she checks off the stalls one by one - this stall closed, this stall sells the same type of food she eats at work everyday, this stallholder too fierce, no mood for food at this stall -  kaching, kaching, kaching...

Cheng Ji sells all the “fried” (actually it’s more like “stir fry”) dishes that are so unhealthy yet taste so good - Fried Kway Teow, Fried Hokkien Mee, Fried Carrot Cake, Fried-this, and Fried-that. The unique difference about their stall is that they sell dongfen - which will be our story for another day since Merlion Wayfarer ordered something different.

While queueing, the stall owner ran out of carrot cake. Merlion Wayfarer saw the helper, a cute round boy that looks just like his mother with a chubby face and small slit-like eyes, take out a huge white “bolster” wrapped in plastic. He tried to undo the white stuff inside, and found it too hard. So his mother helped. She snipped open one end and unwrapped it, then passed him a grate and demo-d to him how to do it.

Apparently, carrot cake comes from a huge jelly bolster squeezed through a metal grate to get long square columns which will be cut further when frying! Ahhhh... interesting revelation hor? (Or maybe she too suah-koo lah...)

Despite having a long queue, the boy topped each dish off with some spring onion. (He has a very patient mother who multi-tasks well. Halfway through cooking, she took some time to pass him a scissor and showed him the correct size to cut.)

The carrot cake was cooked according to my specs - dark with no chilli. (You have no idea how many hawkers can’t follow these 2 simple instructions.) It could have been perfect if it had been crispier instead of so soft. Well, worth trying!

The Saltiest Chocolate Cake Ever

Grin Affair
3 Everton Park, #01-77A
Chinatown, Singapore
August 2012

Merlion Wayfarer had been wanting to try out Grin Affair since she saw it on Bryan Wong's variety show, Share Something (我爱公开), which showcased a different blogger in each episode. To her, cakes stored in glass jars were well, kinda cool. Plus all the names given, and the brown tag given for each jar returned to get a discount.

The first time that she went there was the day after the broadcast of the episode. It was only 2pm in the afternoon and the cakes were sold out. (The outlet closes at 8pm daily.) There was another family outside who had seen the show and wanted to try the cakes. Both the groups walked away disappointed.

So it was with great excitement when Merlion Wayfarer went on a Sunday and found the shop open!

Homely shop sign, albet a bit mouldy as it was made from corkboard and left exposed to the weather elements...

When she entered the store, she was served by an elderly uncle. Initially she was surprised, as it was a different person showcased on the TV show. The scene did feel a bit surreal as Merlion Wayfarer had just stepped in from the bright 35-degree sunshine outside into a darkened shop in an old housing estate and the old man was threading cardboard squares. Was he going to pull out some old spell?

Just a while later, the back door opened. Was the witch going to appear with some spell from a musty back cupboard?

No... It was just a Yando (handsome guy) in a tight-fitting T-shirt. He seemed a bit sullen. Oooops, did they wake him from his afternoon sleep?

The board on the wall with all the delicious-sounding flavours:
  • Honey Lavender
  • Strawberry
  • Durian
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Cookies & Cream
  • "Sorry Sold Out" - Must have been popular!
  • Mango
  • Kiwi Cheesecake
  • Banoffee
  • Hazelnut
  • Matcha & Azuki
(The Yandao's head got in the way of this pic - He is too tall!)

The beautifully-wrapped jam jar cakes. Oooops, they forgot to give Merlion Wayfarer another tag. Would she be coming back again?

Costing S$4.80 a jar, the Honey Lavender tasted like - well, normal. The cake was an ordinary sponge cake. There was no trace of the "lavender" at all.

As for the Dark Chocolate, it was... indescribable. It was the first time that Merlion Wayfarer tasted a SALTY Chocolate Cake. It was so salty that she could not eat beyond 1/3 of the small jar. The mousse was excessively creamy and the cake dry. OMG... and it warranted a visit to the toilet. No more, no more!

Teh Tarik Stall Open During Hari Raya Weekend

Taj Mahal Drinks Stall
Stall 24, Adam Road Food Centre
2 Adam Road, S289876
Bukit Timah, Singapore
19 August 2012

To complement the oiliness of the carrot cake, Merlion Wayfarer ordered teh tarik. It was a good combination. Taj Mahal’s tea was sweet, yet not excessively so, and not too thick. It was also one of the few stalls that were open during the Hari Raya weekend. Good that it was open for all of us thirsty diners!  J

A Local Alternative Of Fried Stuff

Qi Ji
nex
North-East, Singapore
August 2012

Qi Ji is located at Level 3 of the Nex shopping mall in Serangoon Central. On Level 3, besides the major anchor tenant, NTUC, is a plethora of other food outlets - Bibigo, Pizza Hut, Ajisen Gourmet Town, Paradise Inn, Shilin Taiwan Street Snacks, HappyVeg, etc etc etc.

And Merlion Wayfarer chose Qi Ji today - because she needed a place to sit and because she still felt nationalistic (It's still the fortnight after National Day!) to support local food.

At S$4 for a platter (Hmmm... She distinctly remembered it could have been cheaper just a while ago?), each platter was well-loaded with the usual Nasi Lemak "goodies" - FRIED Egg, FRIED Chicken Sausage, Fried Ikan Bilis, FRIED Chicken Wing, FRIED PEANUTS, FRIED Fish Cake, PROCESSED Otah. Hiak hiak!

Of course, the Otah ain’t Lee Wee’s standard (Ooops Merlion Wayfarer took in some non-Qi Ji food!). But other than that, the rest was just wickedly not-bad….. :P

Affordable Don Rice Bowls

Genki Sushi
Orchard Central
Orchard, Singapore
August 2012

Merlion Wayfarer, a true-blue follower of Japanese food, had not been able to find many restaurants with affordable don rice bowls, especially those that are below S$10 (with the ++ added, of course). She was surprised when she saw that in addition to the sushi that Genki Sushi serves, they also have S$7.80 rice bowls.

Ten Don (Tempura Rice Bowl) with a generous serving of 2 prawns, sweet potato and eggplant. The prawns were fat and juicy...

Chirashi Don (Sashimi Rice Bowl) with nearly 2 pieces of everything - shrimps, salmon, tuna, egg...

Definitely a place to go for a quick fix of dons at dinner if you want a place to sit down and chat longer than a foodcourt...

Yomenya Goemon's Brittany Clam Chowder

Yomenya Goemon
Marina Bay Link Mall
South, Singapore
August 2012

While looking at the display window, Merlion Wayfarer was enticed by the name - "Clam Chowder Spaghetti". She had tasted "clam chowder" before. She had also eaten "spaghetti" before. But two together? Hmmm...

The black pot seems familiar. It reminded her of the pot of mussels served with white wine in Brittany. Is it the same? Well, let's see...

First she started with the simple salad bar. She piled the small bowl given with all her favourite salad ingredients - edamame (unripened soya beans), alfafa sprouts, and crunchy butterhead lettuce, and topped with bacon bits and sesame-based wafu dressing...

The spaghetti was served with a smattering of broccoli and striped corn, and a dozen clams swam in the rich cream sauce. One slurp was all it takes to stop talking and concentrate 100% on finishing the whole dish without a pause...

The set meal came with a dessert - chocolate ice cream atop a luxuriant chocolate brownie.
Sweet decadence...

Thai Sweetness & Spiciness

Sakon Thai
Jalan Wangi
MacPherson, Singapore
August 2012

Tucked away in a private housing estate, Sakon Thai is a Thai-theme restaurant with both indoor and outdoor sheltered seats. There is a wide variety of Thai dishes - from noodles, soups, rice to desserts and beverages.

This Honey Chicken was the first to come. Honey is not a easy ingredient to use in cooking. Pour it in too early and it gets burnt easily. Pour it in too late, and the taste does not soak into the meat. The chicken skin was lightly crispy, yet the dish was doused with a healthy sheen due to the richness of the honey....

What's Thai food with the staple Tom Yum Soup? There are two versions here - red or clear. The Tom Yum is strong enough to zap up your nose and zing your ears!

For a taste of healthy carbohydrate infusion, try the Olive Rice...

Balancing a meal requires some vegetables. For a variety of greens, try this Mixed Vegetables. Unlike the oily zichar version, it was so crunchy and fragrant with the fried garlic bits that Merlion Wayfarer nearly ordered another serving...

To balance off the tasty dishes, it was time to order something sweet. What's better than the Thai Glutinous Rice topped with Durian and the Mango version? The Durian version was a bit mild and more expensive at $6 per portion, but the Mango version was just right at $4 with the right amount of coconut milk and fragrant honey mango. Slurp!

Pies That Need Lots Of Water

20 Cross Street, China Square Central
Chinatown
CentralSingapore
August 2012

Merlion Wayfarer was recently at Telok Ayer Street and decided to drop by Don’s original outlet near China Square Central. Despite going past many times, she had not bought anything from there due to the steep prices. So she decided to venture today to not just go in, but go in and buy some pies.

Array of pies on sale on display....

The Signature Chicken Pie that Merlion Wayfarer bought. At S$4.60 per pie for what other confectionaries sell at $2, the price was quite steep...

Merlion Wayfarer also extended her adventure to a Chicken Shepherd Pie at S$5.80. Ingredients within included mainly potato (More than 60% of the pie), chicken breast meat (A bit tough!), corn, something orangey (Carrot? Pumpkin? Sweet potato?), and lots of pepper (Too strong!)...

In the end, Merlion Wayfarer had to drink lots of water to remove the over-strong peppery taste...

Genki Sushi's Sushi Vehicles

Genki Sushi
Orchard Central
Orchard, Singapore
August 2012

Merlion Wayfarer visits OC regularly, and has been to various restaurants there. So far, she had not tried Genki Sushi because of the looooong queues there. Apparently Genki Sushi seemed to be the only eatery in OC that diners have to queue - Seats are guaranteed in the other eateries, at times some of the restaurants look sadly empty too.

Well, Merlion Wayfarer did not know how or what Genki Sushi was like, except that it was just another "conveyor belt sushi restaurant". So when the queue was really short (only one group in front), she decided to risk her stomach and join the queue.

And she was really amused when she finally realized why - The conveyor belt beside her table was more than a single lane conveyor belt. Instead, it was a full three lanes of a food dispensing system!

Once the order has been placed on the iPad located at every table near the conveyor belt, the order will be sent to the kitchen. Confirmed orders cannot be cancelled.

A few minutes later, the lights at each table will start blinking, and a car / train / space shuttle will arrive.

No prizes for guessing what will be located on the vehicle!

Merlion Wayfarer ordered several kinds of Nigiri Sushi - One of which was the Flying Fish Roe. (Coz it sounded exotic mah.) Well, that was a real disappointment. Coz the rice was way too hard. And for the other Nigiris that were ordered, well, the rice fell apart as soon as each was dipped into the soya sauce! Bad bad bad skill...

The rest was just "normal". A surprising find was the Sea Eel Nigiri. It tasted almost like the freshwater version, just without the teriyaki sauce. Instead, a packet of sweet sauce was provided. It was also much more affordable than the freshwater version at S$5.80 instead of S$9.80.

Merlion Wayfarer finished off the meal with a mocha platter. The platter consisted of three fishball-sized mochis - black sesame, green tea with azuki, and peach. It was certainly a good way to top off the meal with a sweet treat!

Chocolate Milkshake Jia Chocolate Bits

Once Upon A Milkshake
Maxwell Chambers
Tanjong Pagar, Singapore
August 2012

Merlion Wayfarer was at Tanjong Pagar on a "Once Upon" fever. After trying out Once Upon A Rosti, she walked that few steps to try on Once Upon A Milkshake at Maxwell Chambers.

It was a weekday night and quite quiet after the rush of office hours. The location could have added to the privacy as it was located behind the Red Dot Museum.

The chocolate Truffle Castle milkshake (S$3.60) was thick and gooey. Little chocolate bits dot the top of the milkshake for a more chocolatey taste. Yummy!

American-Mexican Food Made Aussie Style

Dallas Restaurant and Bar
Boat Quay
South, Singapore
28 July 2012

Merlion Wayfarer was recently invited to a food-tasting session by OpenRice and Dallas Restaurant and Bar. It was with in a group of ten. A total of 6 appetizers (the "Dallas Platter") and 6 other samplers ("Main Courses") were served.

Chicken Quesadillas

This was the first dish that was served. Having a mild dish to start off as an appetizer was a very good choice. The tasty guacamole and sour cream dips added to the deliciousness. Merlion Wayfarer was thinking... if she were watching TV while eating these, she would finish off the whole platter easily ALONE within the space of one commercial break!

Lamb Sliders

Merlion Wayfarer doesn't really like mutton due to the strong taste. The exceptions are usually heavily-marinated or spiced dishes like mutton satay and the occasional kambing soup.

Her first impression was that this dish looked just like Burger King's Mushroom Swiss, especially with the melted cheese all oozing out. And that was enough for her to be garang enough to try it.

Surprisingly, the lamb did not taste strong at all. In fact, it tasted just like beef and was in fact quite enjoyable. Being tennis ball-sized also meant that it would never be too much of a good thing, and could be wolfed down in several bites.

Breaded Mushrooms

The big chunky mushrooms were fried in a lightly-dusted batter. Despite the deep-frying, each of the succulent mushrooms retained its taste - Neither the batter or the creamy garlic mayonnaise was overpowering. With each bite, the juice of the fresh shrooms just oozed out...

Salt and Pepper Calamari

Pairing with the mushrooms was another breaded favourite. Merlion Wayfarer liked the sweet chilli mayonnaise sauce atop the Calamari. Other than that, the Calamari was quite ordinary. (Come on, it ain't easy to wow with fried calamari mah...)

Alabama Pork Ribs and Chicken Tikka With Coriander Mint Sauce

The Alabama Pork Ribs was Merlion Wayfarer's favourite dish. And she did not usually favour pork dishes, much less pork ribs. So you can imagine how good this dish had to taste to be her favourite here...

Once in the palate, the strong BBQ taste of the pork ribs immediately dissipated slowly. With each bite, the juiciness of the pork mixed with the bak kwa-type BBQ taste and the special marinate and filled the palate with yummy goodness. One was definitely not enough!

Chicken Tikka was traditionally made from small pieces of boneless chicken marinated in spices and yogurt, and baked using skewers in a clay-based oven called a tandoor (Wikipedia, 2012). Much like the Chicken Tikka found in South Indian restaurants, this version has been pre-marinated in spices and roasted. However, it was less spicy than the Indian version (probably to suit the Westerners' palate), and a tad too salty.

Crunchy Honey Mustard Bacon Salad and Chicken Penne Pasta

After three sets of heavy samplers, it was time to move on to two lighter dishes.

Merlion Wayfarer was not a fan of avocado. However, she found the Salad a welcome change to refresh her tastebuds.

The Spaghetti seemed to be a less carefully thought-out addition to the menu. Somehow, having a milder Italian-styled dish after some strong-tasting ones left it tasting bland and unmemorable.

Avocado Chicken Parmigiana

Dallas' version was made from chicken breast pan-fried in Japanese bread crumbs (not sure what exactly is the "Japanese" version), and grilledw ith pasta sauce, avocado and mozzarella cheese. Merlion Wayfarer of course enjoyed the cheese most. What lies beneath the cheese is secondary. And and, the fries served here was a bit too much. No more carbos, hopefully, for the rest of the upcoming dishes...

Southern Burger

The Southern Burger was our second burger in this sampling. It consisted of chargrilled ground beef topped with bacon swiss cheese, with atouch of bacon, swiss cheese, BBQ sauced, tomatoes and caramelized onions on a ciabatta bun.

The beef was done just right - medium-well. Unlike most burgers, this patty was not minced. In fact, you can see the layers upon layers of beef within the patty. Merlion Wayfarer could have eaten more, but once again, she stopped short of eating the caro-intensive fries (again!).

Beef and Chicken Fajitas

Essentially, these were Mexican popiahs - flour tortillas served with beef and chicken in caramelized onions, with guacamole, sour cream, salsa and re-fried bean (Have no idea why it's called this!) dips. Comparatively, the chicken tasted better than the beef.

Fiery and Berri Pork Ribs

It was with a big sigh of relief that most of the group greeted this as the last dish. Most did not dare try the "fiery" version, fearing that it might be too spicy for our local taste buds. But no, they were told it was adapted to Westerners' palate, and would be just mildly spicy. True true...

After trying both versions, Merlion Wayfarer still preferred the sweet taste of the berries. It was quite an interesting combination for red meats like pork ribs, and sort of left her preferring a dessert as a final dish...

What Else About Dallas

The menu showing all the dishes we sampled in our session...

The French oil painting displayed on the wall...

And then American ones...

The selection of wines available...

The view from the top floor lounge...

Merlion Wayfarer Says

Merlion Wayfarer had accepted other food-tasting invites before.
  • Like most food-tasting sessions, there were really superb dishes, and there were other mediocre dishes.
  • Like many food-tasting sessions, the session was conducted during the restaurant's off-peak hours, so utmost attention could be provided to the food-tasters.
  • Like some food-tasting sessions, the owner or head waiter was there to give an introduction to every dish, and had assigned several wait staff to attend to the food-tasters.

However, Dallas Restaurant and Bar impressed Merlion Wayfarer:
  • When one of the food-tasters asked for a drink that was not provided as part of the food-tasting session, it was provided without question.
  • Even so when the glass was emptied, the wait staff topped it up without being asked. Not once, but several times.
  • The food-tasters were invited to visit the exclusive lounge at the top floor reserved for private bookings.
  • When some of the food-tasters were full and could not eat any more, takeaway boxes were provided for them to bring the food back.
  • A business card was presented to each and every food-taster by the restaurant manager. She was friendly, yet professional and attentive. She herself attended to serving our table with a smile and acknowledged each of our thank-yous.
  • Most of all, this was the most impressive spread that Merlion Wayfarer had ever experienced in a food-tasting session with a total of generous portions of 12 dishes!
