Baked Breads Simple & Exotic

Paris Baguette Cafe
Wisma Atria
Orchard, Singapore
September 2012

Merlion Wayfarer so enjoyed the experience at Paris Baguette that she was back within the same month to snuggle into the armchair there.

Baked breads which range from the Korean Bulgogi Sandwich at S$6 to a plain Baguette at S$3...

Simple croissants go at S$2.50 while more exotic ones like the Cheese Half Pan is at S$3.50 and the Italian Chicken Calzone at S$3.60...

A heated fragrant Chocolate Croissant coated with glaze to make it so much more appetizing.
With the first bite, the glaze gave the crust an initial sweetness before the flakiness of the layer bread sets in. The chocolate filling was visible, could have been more ample...

Portrayed As Cartoon Characters

Once Upon A Milkshake
Maxwell Chambers
Tanjong Pagar, Singapore
September 2012

Today, Merlion Wayfarer was reminded of one of the first few reasons why she was attracted to the products here - The flavours of the milkshakes were adorably portrayed as cartoon characters with interesting names.

Shakes were priced affordably at S$3.60 (mini), S$5.70 (regular) and S$6.90 (large). They are flavourful and milky.

Quite The Ordinary Fare

Hao Xiang Seafood Garden
Punggol Plaza, Punggol Field
North-East, Singapore
September 2012

XinZhou MiFen was quite the ordinary fare, albeit a bit dry and tasteless. The ingredients were the standard cha shao (roast pork) and some crab stick.

Hao Xiang has an interesting combination of spinach with garlic, which is not on that many zichar stall menus. The spinach was was not overcooked and soggy. Instead it was crispy and surprisingly crunchy.

Although she ordered "Prawn Paste Chicken", Merlion Wayfarer was surprised to have Prawn Paste "Chicken Wings" served on her table.

A Skyful of Colours

Kite Festival 2013
The Promontory, Marina Bay
South, Singapore
08 September 2012

Merlion Wayfarer was invited to a blogger engagement yesterday at the Kite Festival. She went there from Raffles Place and was greeted with this super long ladybird kite!

On the way, she noticed a long queue snaking all the way around the Promontory. And this queue extended to past the URA's Marina Bay City Gallery! Guess what it was for - no prizes - yeap, it was for the goodie bags.

Most of the kite-making instructors were quite nice. However, the couple from Korea (Choi Sang Sook and Rhee Kitai) turned many people off - big time. While other instructors invited excess groups to stand on both sides of the table to utilize the space, the male Korean instructor scolded people who stood on his side, and said all the space was reserved for his movement only. He also started his hourly session early and refused to give materials to adults who were there early but who didn't have an accompanying child. It was a most unpleasant experience just trying to be in their session!

Merlion Wayfarer was assigned to cover Kelvin Chow's Fringed Delta Kite session. Here are the steps to make a delta kite:
  1. Fold a long strip of mahjong paper in half.
  2. Fold to the corner twice.
  3. Reverse fold to create the bottom part of the kite.
  4. Cut the bottom part of the triangle into strips for the tail.
  5. Secure on the strips with scotch tape and rubber tubes.
  6. Punch a hole for the kite string.
  7. Tie the string to the kite and it's done!

Merlion Wayfarer also attended the Pakistan session by Abdul Waheed and Bilal Ahmad. These two friendly gentleman are from Pakistan. The younger one has even studied in Singapore and is familiar with many places in Singapore. Here's their version:
  1. Cut a triangle piece of rice paper.
  2. Put a strip of wood across it from corner to corner.
  3. Bend another strip and create an arc from the other tip.
  4. Make a tail from a small square.
  5. Then punch two sets of holes along the vertical strip.
  6. Tie a loop and adjust the knots upwards as the tail will be heavier, and it's done too!

Kites were given in the goodie bags. Many members of the public were trying out their own kites in the open area with strings all over. It was quite dangerous as these strings were not visible against the backlighting from the evening sun.

When Merlion Wayfarer moved to the grass patches to try out her kites, a group from the event organizer came over to ask everyone to move out as the areas are reserved for "invited guests". Merlion scratched her head - Why were they not chasing people off the boardwalk instead for safety reasons? She certainly hoped no one was hurt by kite strings today...

Members of Slack Taxi from Australia, a roving street performer act,
preparing themselves then bouncing around and entertaining kids with their antics...

Classy Reload, a group of 4 string instrumentalists, on the main stage.
Beautiful serenades which added a touch of class to the crowded promenade...

Even foreigners were attracted by the activities. Here, two of them tried out the ricepaper kites that they made...

Everyone certainly had fun today at the Kite Festival!  :D

The Italian & The Swiss

Max Brenner Chocolate Bar
VivoCity, South, Singapore
July 2012

Merlion Wayfarer had a girls' night out tonight. What better to accompany catch-up news than hot chocolate?

The "Italian Thick Hot Chocolate" (S$6.90), a thick hot chocolate with vanilla cream and milk chocolate, and "Swiss Whipped Cream Chocolat" ($7.50), a dark hot chocolate with fresh whipped cream on top", were ordered.

The cups came in cute "Hug Mugs" with different parts of a single cartoon character with each turn of the mug.

Actually Merlion Wayfarer ain't no chocolate connoiseur. She just likes chocolate. Being that, she was not able to describe wonders about the two drinks, except that both were deliciously decadent, with the Italian sweeter than the Swiss. A warning though, both are extremely rich and are best drunk over a looong conversation, shared with a buddy, or supplemented with lots of water. Jelak to the ultimate!

Everything Very The QQ

Jia Xiang Sarawak Kuching Kolo Mee
VivoCity, South, Singapore
August 2012

Jia Xiang's noodles are springy and QQ. Shaped in very tight coils even when served on the plate, they are bouncy when chewed.

Merlion Wayfarer's craving at the VivoCity outlet resulted in a plate of Black Pepper Duck Kolo Mee at S$6.50.

The base is light with a touch of spring onions and sesame. Vegetables are cooked just right such that when chewed, they are crunchy with a thick juicy squish sound.

The duck is best! With a thick slab of white skin, the smoked duck simply melts in your mouth. Each bite unleashes a whole mouthful of juice from the pinked duck. The aftertaste is so aromatic that it lingers even after you've stepped out of the restaurant...

Seen & Heard - Brad Pitt Socks

Singapore
September 2012

Merlion Wayfarer spotted this pair of socks bought by her cousin recently. Finding it familiar, she tried confirming it with her cousin, who not only confirmed it as Brad Pitt but also that the shot was from Fight Club. Really cool socks from China...

Fight Club is a 1999 American film based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk. The film was directed by David Fincher and stars Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter. Norton plays the unnamed protagonist, an "everyman" who is discontented with his white-collar job. He forms a "fight club" with soap maker Tyler Durden, played by Pitt, and becomes embroiled in a relationship with him and a dissolute woman, Marla Singer, played by Bonham Carter.

Hair In The Salad

8 Degrees Taiwanese Bistro (八度空间)
North-East, Singapore
June 2012

8 Degrees recently moved to a new location in the North-East after the media publicity over parking space along Yio Chu Kang Road.

At that time, due to the new opening, they were offering set meals in bento boxes as a promotion. Merlion Wayfarer ordered a "8 degrees mango fish box" at S$9.80 - A fish bento set that came with soup and tea.

The thick and sweet mango sauce complimented the crispiness of the fish batter. There was an 3/4-boiled egg and some salad. Two mini Taiwan sausages added a nice touch to the cheap plastic box.

Halfway through her meal, Merlion Wayfarer was quite horrified to find a hair in the salad. Instead of replacing the entire set, the owner replaced just the salad with another type.

Oh horrors of horror... Even though the service was good, with an endless supply of plain water, find such gross things in the meal was a no-no for Merlion Wayfarer. Yikes...

Of Bubbled Skin & Flaky Batter

Tontei, Shokutsu 10
Nex, Serangoon
Singapore
July 2012

Tontei is one of the best places Merlion Wayfarer knows for tonkatsu.

Fried chicken with bubbled skin. Ultimate crunchy skin that is absolutely unforgettable! Grind the sesame on the grooved bowl with the wooden club, and pour it into your rice and the tonkatsu sauce for a fragrant dip...

Set meal (add S$7.50) with sashimi, miso soup, rice, fruit, and pickles. Free flow of salad. Pork loin is juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The marinate permeates through to the core of the succulent pork slices. The batter flakes off as you bite into the crispy crust...

Maxwell's Ordinary Ngoh Hiang

Meal Ngoh Hiang
Maxwell Market
Tanjong Pagar / Chinatown, Singapore
September 2012

The typical Ngoh Hiang stall, this stall sells mainly fried stuff. Merlion Wayfarer ordered several varieties of minced pork rolls and pork sausages with a century egg. The dip was quite ordinary, the items were quite ordinary, all were typically oily. Nothing spectacular about this stall. Just a place to satisfy a Ngoh Hiang craving if you have one.

"Specialty" Mee Sua

Yan Ji (ç‚Žè®°)
Maxwell Market
Tanjong Pagar / Chinatown, Singapore
September 2012

Merlion Wayfarer ordered a minced pork noodes from this stall. On a big side panel, they listed "Specialty Dried Mee Sua" at S$3. Something worth trying, she thought. After a few mouthfuls, it was not that "special", just ordinary mee pok style noodles with minced pork and fishballs. The fishballs in the bowl were not as big as those in the advertisement. The smell of vinegar was also a bit too strong for her liking. Perhaps the only "specialty" was the use of mee sua instead of mee giah or mee pok?

Fried In The Dark & Sweet Way

Fried Kway Teow . Fried Prawn Mee . Fried Oyster . Carrot Cake
Maxwell Market
Tanjong Pagar / Chinatown, Singapore
September 2012

This stall is known more by the products it sells - Fried Kway Teow, Fried Prawn Mee, Fried Oyster, Carrot Cake - than by its name. Merlion Wayfarer ordered a Fried Kway Teow and expected ordinary fare. But what she got was a fragrant plate of noodles - cooked just right, with ample cockles, fried black and sweet. Perfect!
